Did you know that you have a connection to the “higher” (soul version) of yourself, which is a lot closer to the source of all wisdom, knowledge, joy, abundance and love?

We all do!

You don’t need to have supernatural abilities or always run to consult a medium to get answers to your most burning questions about your love life, work decisions, or your life’s purpose. You can actually be your own personal guide and hone your intuition in a way that helps you be the best human possible.

Whether you want to be a better friend, partner, daughter, or parent…

...Or whether you want to improve your health, tune up your romantic and platonic relationships, or level up in your work and be more successful…

… you have an inherent Goddess-like quality within that helps steer you in the direction of the best version of yourself with gentle nudges and synchronistic signs, if you stay open to receive them.

The truth is, you are a very powerful being, although you might sometimes forget this. You can be whatever you choose to be and lead the life you want, and your internal compass never fails to point you in that direction, shall you simply pay attention and hear that inner knowing - or your “higher self.”

Here’s how you can tune into that ethereal version of “you,” one who has the answers, clarity and deeper awareness about who you are and how to align yourself to the universal flow of life, in 5 easy steps.

IMPORTANT: Before you start

Pick a day when you can dedicate time to yourself for at least 1.5 hours. That means being alone with no distractions, no phone, and no interruptions.

Music is okay as long as it’s not too stimulating, preferably with not too many lyrics to distract you. Have a journal for writing nearby. You can use your computer to type but DO NOT GET SIDETRACKED and turn off the WiFi if you do use it.

Set an intention that everything you will do is going to be about self love in this timeframe.

Step 1: Do NOTHING with intention.

Start by lying down or sitting down in a comfortable pose. Close your eyes and try to stay still and get into a meditative state.

You don’t really have to do anything except relax and do nothing with intention. That means you’ve given yourself permission to do nothing to facilitate this process, which might feel strange as we are so used to constantly stimulating our brains.

You might get bored, and that’s okay - stay with it. You might ask why you’re doing this and wonder if this is a waste of time. Let those thoughts come and continue to do nothing for 5-10 minutes.

Step 2: Observe and breathe.

Allow your mind to wander, but if it goes to something negative or unpleasant, or if you notice yourself getting pulled into your usual thought patterns, redirect your attention to your breath and your body.

After a few rounds of breaths (another 2-5 minutes), when the mind begins its monologue again, observe where it is taking you. Ask yourself what do you feel like doing at this moment.

Step 3: Engage in one of these physical activities.

Whatever physical activity you get called to do in that moment (whatever pops into your mind first) go ahead and start doing it. Remember your intention at the beginning, which was to do only self-love activities, so don’t fall for the temptation to grab your phone and message your boyfriend, or fall down the Wikipedia rabbit hole, or write an email, or do anything work-related.

Do this activity for 10-15 minutes or as long as you have time for it.

Examples:

  • Dance to the music you’re listening to
  • Stretch, do yoga. Is ecstatic yoga a thing, or did I just invent something new?
  • Chant, do pranayama, sing mantras
  • Cardio circuit with jumping jacks and leap squats, if you’re into that kind of thing.
  • Play a steel tongue drum or an instrument you can play effortlessly.

Step 4: Get into alpha-theta

When you feel satisfied with the activity and duration of time you spent on it, return to your meditative position (preferably sitting up to allow for an opened up main energy channel to align up toward the sky and receive downloads) and close your eyes, focusing inwards on your internal body and breath. Observe where your mind goes and whether you are able to stay still in your mind with longer intervals.

This is a time when your brain likely enters an alpha state, which is a relaxed alertness state, slower than the normal waking-life beta state. Alpha waves are those between 8 and 12 (Hz). Alpha brain waves enhance mental resourcefulness and coordination, relaxation, calm and ease. Alpha state is a bridge between your conscious and subconscious mind, and it is derived from the white matter of the brain, which is considered the part of the brain that connects all parts with each other. Alpha is linked to extroversion, creativity and mental work, good moods, authenticity and peacefulness.

And depending on how good of a meditator you are and how easily you can get into still presence, you might start teetering between alpha and theta brain wave frequencies.

Theta activity has a frequency of 3.5 to 7.5 Hz and is classed as “slow” activity. Theta state reflects the state between wakefulness and sleep and relates to the subconscious mind - the grey matter of the brain. It is seen in connection with creativity, intuition, daydreaming, and fantasizing and is a repository for memories, emotions, and sensations. Theta waves are strong during internal focus, meditation, prayer, and spiritual awareness. Theta is believed to reflect activity from the limbic system and hippocampal regions. When the theta rhythm appears to function normally it mediates and/or promotes adaptive, complex behaviors such as learning and memory.

Alpha-Theta training can create an increase in sensation, abstract thinking, self-control, and a sense of “oneness” or “knowing.”

Step 5: Take on one or more of the 3 Pillars of Self-Love

From this newfound alpha-theta state, you will have a stronger connection to your “higher self” and this is the time to engage in one or more activities of the 3 Pillars of Self-Love.

As you may have read in my books or learned in my courses, the 3 Pillars of Self-love are: Self-Awareness, Self-care, and Self-Development.

Ask yourself which pillar of self love you need most right now. You might need a few activities from all three, and you can do as many as you’re called to in the time that you have allowed yourself for this.

Examples:

  • Self-Awareness activities:
    • write in your journal about what’s on your mind now - stream of consciousness free writing
    • continue your meditation practice
    • Draw, paint or doodle
    • Write poetry or inspirational quotes

  • Self-Care activities:
    • Take a bath or shower with aroma oil products
    • Give yourself a skin-care facial or do nice makeup
    • Pleasure yourself in any physical way you may need to, including but not limited to giving yourself a foot rub
    • Go for a walk in nature or at the beach
    • Cuddle your pet
    • Use aroma oils

  • Self-Development activities:
    • Make a gratitude list
    • Say your affirmations
    • Write out your daily/ weekly/ monthly and or yearly goals
    • Update your vision board or make a new one
    • Work out some more or do a full yoga sequence
    • Practice a skill you love doing that’s not related to your work output
    • Read a bit of a book that teaches or inspires you

As you do these activities while being totally immersed in the moment, you might begin to feel an inner knowing about something important you need to be aware of. It could be an answer to a question you’ve been asking, or a dilemma you’ve been struggling with.

You might instinctively feel certain about taking a decision, or gain clarity on a situation or person. You might feel confident in knowing what step to take next in your work, family or love life, or in personal wellness.

An idea might suddenly pop up that could help you in some aspect of your life. A creative flow might start up, in which case go ahead and take some notes in your journal or digital notepad.

You might understand someone’s viewpoint that you previously disagreed with, or you might see a negative situation from a different, more grateful perspective.

An awareness of your triggers, patterns or habitual reactions might suddenly become obvious and you’ll clearly see where they stem from.

You might rise towards higher vibrational states of peace, love and joy, as you receive a message in the form of a thought or impulse to do something generous or compassionate.

And you will most certainly be called to have faith in the Great Unknown, and be pulled towards that hard-to-reach state of total surrender, acceptance of what is, and trust that you’re exactly where you need to be at this moment in time.

After you spend some time receiving all of this beautiful wisdom and staying in this elevated, connected state of being, you may go about the rest of your day. You can now dive into your work and reap the benefits of this newfound clarity, creativity and motivation.

Watch how you show up in whatever it is you are doing and whichever roles you are taking on. Do you have more internal resources to be a better parent, friend, daughter or partner? Are you more creative, focused, proactive, or productive in your work? Are you calmer, more present, more grounded, and immersed deeper into the action you’re taking in the moment? Are you a more loving, patient, kind, hopeful, humorous, grateful, considerate and compassionate person?

I bet that you are!

Connecting to the higher self is available to anyone, at any time. The key to it is to carve out some time for it, make it a consistent part of your self-love practice, and look at it as something indulgent - like a treat for yourself in the midst of a busy day.
